4:20 began at San Rafael High School in Marin County, California. The person that turned me onto 4:20 way back in 1987 was a graduate of San Rafael High School. The main thing that attracted me to 4:20 was something this friend told me, that 4:20 was a way to celebrate with your friends even when those friends weren’t with you. It was a secret back then, something you could reference at a Grateful Dead show and no one knew what you were talking about. Only a select few knew about it, and you had to consider someone a true connoiseur before you let them in on the secret. It seems that this year’s highly anticipated event, a whole month of 04/2020, will be an homage to the true nature of 4:20 - smoking (or vaping) with your friends who can’t be with you.
